CYAC's coaches have current safety credentials and professional coaching certifications through the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA). In addition, all prospective coaches undergo extensive background clearances and reference checks as part of the YMCA's pre-employment process. Our coaches are enthusiastic about swimming, enjoy working with swimmers of all ages, and strive to be good role models of physical fitness and positive character values.
 
   
Don Remaly Head Coach - Don Remaly, MD

"Doc" enters the 2010 - 11 season with 24 years of head coaching experience and an attentive, personalized approach to coaching children of all abilities from ages 6 to 18.  He was the National YMCA Coach of the Year in 1997, and a nominated finalist 3 other years. He is certified by the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) as a Level 5 coach, the highest professional level recognized. He has coached NCAA (Div. 1) champions, over a dozen YMCA National champions and also serves as an assistant coach for the UVA mens' and women's swim teams (6 years). His professional interest in sports medicine and human physiology adds a dimension of knowledge and expertise that is unparalleled in our region.

Assistant Coaches


    Kevin Boyd enters the 2010-2011 season for his fifth year as part of the CYAC coaching staff.   He is a PhD candidate and teaching assistant for the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Virginia.  Kevin brings a variety of coaching experience to the team.  He was the head coach of a summer league team in Atlanta for several years, has coached stroke clinics for the Cooper Fitness center in Dallas, Texas and for the Swim Atlanta team in Atlanta, Ga.  He has been an assistant coach at Crozet for several summers.  Kevin is an ASCA certified Level 2 coach.  He and his wife, Fátima, have two sons and a daughter.
      Luke Anderson joined the CYAC coaching staff in May 2009 and brings a long history of competitive swimming with him, including past experience as a YMCA swimmer.  Luke graduated from UVA in 2005 with a B.A. in English and received an M.F.A. from the University of Dublin in 2006.  He is the Communications and New Media Specialist for St. Anne's-Belfield School and serves as their Varsity Swimming Head Coach.  While swimming for UVA, Luke was the ACC's MVP in 2002 and 2005, and was ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2002.  He was a 13-time NCAA All-American and competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Trials. Luke is married and has a two year old daughter and an infant son.

    Ryan Gil joined the CYAC coaching staff in the 2008-09 season, with 11 years of competitive swimming experience, as well as five years of coaching experience.  Ryan will be a fourth-year student at UVA for the 2009-10 year and is majoring in English and Philosophy.  He is the Head Coach of the Planatations Swim Team in Damascus, Maryland, as well as a youth and adult swim instructor at the University of Virginia's AFC.
      Pat Reams joined the CYAC staff in May 2009, upon graduation from UVA with a BA in Economics and a minor in Foreign Affairs.  He is enrolled in UVA's McIntire School MS in Commerce Program, with a concentaration in Financial Services. While at UVA, he was named to the All-ACC Academic team and was a 7-time All-ACC team member, based on placing in the top 3 at the ACC Championships.  He was a semi-finalist in the 200 fly at the 2008 Olympic Trials, an NCAA Honorable Mention All-American in 2008 (200 fly), and a two-time recipient of UVA men's swim team's Hardest Worker Award.
      Ian Vogt joined the CYAC Coaching staff in October '09.  He is in UVa’s undergraduate program majoring in English.  While at UVa, he swam for the ‘Hoos for two years, qualifying for the All-ACC Academic team, Athletic Honor Roll and Dean’s List (Spring 08, Fall 08, Spring 09).  Over the past summer, Ian coached Hollymead Swim Team with Kristen Wallace.  He competed in the 200 Butterfly and 400 IM at the 2008 Olympic Trials.  In his spare time, Ian works as the Media Coordinator for the student run charity Face Aids.


    Kristen Wallace joined the CYAC Coaching staff in April '09.  She graduated from UVA in May 2010 with a masters degree in education.  During her four years at UVA, Kristen was a member of the swim team and co-captain her senior year, leading the Hoos to the ACC team title and a 12th place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division 1 Championships.  Kristen has earned All-American honors and is a member of 5 UVA record-holding relays. 
      Ann Richards joined the CYAC coaching staff in December 2009, with 15 years of competitive swimming experience, as well as four years of coaching experience.  Ann swam for four years at the University of Rochester and recently relcoated to Charlottesville from Boston.  She is currently working in research at UVA while her  husband is a student at the Darden School of Business.
 Shelley Remaly     Shelley Remaly is an ASCA-certified Level 3 coach with 24 years of swim coaching experience. She oversees the administrative aspects of CYAC and is a volunteer assistant coach.  Shelley serves the YMCA of the USA as an instructor for Priniciples of YMCA Swimming & Diving, and Level 1 and 2 Swim Officials courses.  She is the Group Representative for the YMCA's Upper Southeast Region (VA, NC, SC).
