Building individuals, building families
The YMCA believes that building a strong community and strong families involves building the individual. Emphasizing Judeo-Christian values, personal character development and sportsmanship in every activity we offer, the YMCA provides a multi-generational experience, where families can improve their health, enjoy activities together and fellowship with others.

Building a YMCA
Recent studies, conducted by Albemarle County, The City of Charlottesville, and the YMCA, show that currently there is a substantial shortage of indoor recreational space and program availability throughout the community. The studies called for an indoor space in upwards of 150,000 SF. The full vision of the new YMCA at McIntire Park will begin to address this need.

Designed to be inclusive
At the YMCA, we pride ourselves on being representative of the community at large—a place where all are welcome and everyone has a sense of belonging. The YMCA is designed to be inclusive, so whether you’re an athlete or if you’ve never used an exercise machine in your life—the YMCA has a place for you. Memberships are available to those who cannot afford them, via scholarships. In 2006, the Piedmont Family YMCA provided over $215,000 in financial aid to program participants.

Kids — The YMCA will provide a great place for kids to be kids through recreation and active play. The new facility will also provide programs for kids to exercise and play alongside mom and dad. The new facility will also serve as a “home base” for many of our highly-regarded youth sports programs.

Teens — The YMCA will provide a place for teens to belong—it will provide opportunities to gain first job experience, develop social skills and build personal character.

Seniors — The YMCA will offer seniors a home for exercise programs ranging from water therapy to low impact aerobics. Physical activity is vital to maintaining healthy joints and muscles— especially among seniors.

Adults — The YMCA will use its gymnasium space and expansive wellness facility, with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, to provide a healthier lifestyle for all adults. There will also be opportunities for adult members to get involved in community service through YMCA volunteer programs.

Aquatics — The new and much needed YMCA Aquatics Center will provide a multitude of programs from “learn to swim” lessons for children, water aerobics for senior adults and lap lanes for fitness swimmers.
