In 1994, a small group of business men and women came together to form the Piedmont Family YMCA. Their mission—to develop programming to meet the physical, mental and spiritual needs of a growing community. Even faced with the challenges of not having a facility of its own, the Piedmont Family YMCA has positively impacted the community. Currently, the YMCA cooperates with dozens of area schools, churches and other service agencies to conduct its programming. The YMCA has grown from serving 800 children on a budget of $133,000, to serving over 6,000 youth on a $1 million budget in 2005.

As we look to expand our programs and services for all families throughout the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle community—building a full-facility family YMCA is the critical next step in our journey. With our new home, we will provide Charlottesville and Albemarle County community members with some of the best facilities, programs and wellness resources in the Commonwealth of Virginia—and these benefits will be offered to all, regardless of age, race, religion, gender or financial capability.

We are Building Families — by providing a destination for the whole family with activities, fellowship and exercise.
We are Building Character — by emphasizing caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in every activity we offer.
We are Building a YMCA — by embarking on a campaign to build a YMCA facility and expand our reach, offering programs that benefit the entire community.
